The Bolton Learning Partnership’s GCSE Maths Days

The Bolton Learning Partnership’s GCSE Maths Days, held on 27th and 30th March 2026, stand as a powerful example of what can be achieved through genuine collaboration and a shared commitment to young people’s success. Bringing together 200 students from across 11 secondary schools, the initiative was carefully designed to support those on the crucial borderline of achieving a Grade 5 in GCSE Maths—students with a secure Grade 5 prediction in English, but an insecure Grade 5 in Maths.

These two days were not simply revision sessions; they were the culmination of months of strategic planning and professional generosity. Leading Maths experts from across Bolton schools volunteered their time and expertise to develop high-quality learning materials. This work was underpinned by two intensive development days alongside the curriculum hub and NW Turing Maths specialists, during which a “Maths DNA” blueprint for Bolton was created. This blueprint reflects a shared vision for excellence in Maths education and ensures consistency in the knowledge and approaches being delivered across schools.

The dedication of these Maths leaders was nothing short of exceptional. Their willingness to collaborate beyond the boundaries of their own schools highlights a deep-rooted commitment to the success of the 19k students across the borough. This collective responsibility and moral purpose are what make the Bolton Learning Partnership such a strong and effective network.

During the GCSE Maths Days, students participated in three structured 90-minute lessons, covering six key topics identified as essential for success in this summer’s exams. The sessions were designed to build confidence, deepen understanding, and address common misconceptions. From the outset, expectations were clear. Dominic McKeon, Chair of the Bolton Learning Alliance and lead for the Curriculum Hub’s Maths work, opened each day by setting the tone and reinforcing the importance of effort, focus, and resilience.

The response from students was overwhelmingly positive. Without exception, they demonstrated excellent attitudes to learning, working with determination and focus throughout the sessions. Feedback indicated that students found the day helpful, with many expressing increased confidence in tackling challenging Maths topics.

An additional motivational boost came through the support of Whysup and sponsor partner JD Sports, who generously donated hundreds of pounds’ worth of vouchers. These were awarded during the final assemblies, providing a celebratory end to each day and recognising students’ hard work and commitment.

The success of these GCSE Maths Days is a testament to what can be achieved when schools unite around a common goal. Huge thanks must go to Dominic McKeon and the team of Maths experts who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the events such a success. Their passion, professionalism, and belief in Bolton’s young people have created an initiative that will undoubtedly have a lasting impact.

As the summer examination season approaches, the Bolton Learning Partnership looks forward to celebrating the outcomes of this work with schools across the borough.
