He is a public speaker, trainer, school improvement lead, and a primary school governor. He remains a practising teacher, currently working in secondary, FE and HE settings.
Matt writes for various newspapers and magazines including SecEd, Headteacher Update, SEN Leader, TES, School Business Manager Magazine, Children & Young People Now, Attendance Matters Magazine, and School Inspection & Improvement Magazine. He sits on SecEd’s editorial board and co-hosts their podcast, as well as writes most of their monthly pull-out best practice supplements.
During the session Matt explored teaching and learning strategies, in particular looking at metacognition. He shared a 6-part plan for developing students metacognitive and self-regulation skills; discussed cognitive load theory and a 3-step learning process focussing on the importance of teacher explanation, modelling and retrieval practice.
